Regions around the Iraqi, Syrian and Iranian borders demand extra caution from Westerners, with current global tensions as they are. Localised violence does sometimes occur, and has been known to consist of bombings of targets seen to represent Western ideals – banks and consulates, for example. It is always advisable to check with travel operators for up to date news on the region and any possible tensions. The country is generally safe otherwise, though it would be most unwise to defame the name of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the Turkish national hero, with fines and jail time not uncommon for doing so.
