The roads are the preferred method of transportation for most Turkish, though terrible road safety records put a lot of people off using them with severe accidents on the roads all too common. An extensive maintenance program is underway to repair and improve the Turkish streets, and the quality of road surface is good. Coaches are a popular method of transport and are often more reliable and faster than trains, and car hire for personal use or with chauffeur services is widely available from a number of multinational companies. Buses, trolleybuses and taxis are available forms of public transport, with a Metro system planned for Ankara. Tickets for buses are bought before getting on the vehicle and are dropped into a box by the driver. The bus services in Turkey are efficient and modern. Turkish Maritime Lines offer ferry and cruise services from all major ports in the country, and there are also short-hop ferry services available around the ports of Istanbul. Internal flights are another option, and are offered from and to each of the major cities.
